Every August, the heritage agencies of Douglas County, Kansas, celebrate Civil War on the Western Frontier. This weeklong series features activities relating to the Bleeding Kansas era at Historic Lecompton, Black Jack Battlefield, and other venues, and a host of Civil War-themed programs.
The Watkins Museum of History in Lawrence will hold a daylong series of activities as part of CWWF on Saturday, August 20. These include bus and walking tours of sites associated with William Quantrill’s notorious attack on the town in 1863 and his retreat. We’ll also feature free talks by renowned historians Diane Mutti-Burke and Jennifer Weber. The museum has a beautiful permanent exhibit on Bleeding Kansas and the Civil War, including artifacts related to John Brown and James Lane. There will also be a new exhibit in August on Civil War soldiers’ lives.
